Modular sofa: the guide to choosing well

A modular sofa is a sofa made up of several elements, called modules, that you assemble to suit your needs. A corner module, a seat, a chaise longue, an armrest: each one can be added, removed or moved. It is the most flexible answer to a living room whose dimensions, or habits, change over time.

Why choose a modular sofa

• It adapts to the room. Straight, corner or panoramic, the shape follows the available space instead of being imposed on it.
• It evolves. A house move, a new living room, a growing family: you add or rearrange modules rather than buying a new sofa.
• It is easier to deliver. Separate elements get up a staircase, through a narrow door or into a lift more easily than a one-piece sofa.

Step 1: measure before you choose

Measure the length of each wall involved, then note the doors, windows, radiators and sockets. Leave a gap of about 60 cm around the sofa. Then mark out its footprint on the floor with masking tape: it is the most reliable way to check that the chosen shape has room to breathe.

Step 2: choose the shape

Three main families cover most living rooms:

• straight sofas, for a long wall or a narrow room;
• corner sofas, which structure a lounge corner, with a left or right corner;
• panoramic sofas, designed for large spaces and large gatherings.

Step 3: compose the modules

First count how many people really sit together. Add a chaise longue if you like to stretch out, or a pouffe to extend the seating without crowding the room. • Choosing from a photo without measuring the route to the living room.
• Forgetting to plan for headrests or for modules that slide back, if you want to be able to adjust them.
• Picking a fabric on colour alone, without considering everyday use.
